Minerve Tour

Description

Minerve is one of the most remarkable sites in Languedoc – Rousillon. Amongst a spectacular natural setting, the site has been inhabited since ancient times and was once an imposing medieval Cathar city, built by the Viscounts of Minerve. Wander through the village enjoying the typical authentic medieval architecture, paved streets and small gardens.

Go down into the Cesse canyon and see the two natural bridges that the river created as it tunneled through the rock. You can even walk through them during the dry season (May – September).

Free time for lunch or enjoy an authentic southern France picnic (20 / pers).

In the afternoon choose between visiting the Caunes Minervois village and abbey, olive oil tasting or step back in time and discover the historical millstone quarry (Sentier des meulieres) and Dolmen des fades before treating your palate to some local wine.

Caunes Minervois Village and Abbey.

Hidden within the small medieval village of Caunes Minervois is an abbey worth visiting. A sight to see with its locally quarried red marble – a material that was famously used at Versailles and in Europe’s most prestigious historic buildings, this abbey was built in the 8th Century.

Olive oil tasting.

Become an olive oil connoisseur when you visit a local olive oil producer.

Millstone quarry and Dolmen des fades.

Explore a historical millstone site where for over 2000 years the hills were quarried for the single purpose of making millstones. A short walk takes you on a loop around the site where you will also enjoy nice views of the surrounding landscapes. Afterwards head over to Dolmen des fades, the largest tomb from Neolithic times in Southern France. Set within a pine forest, wander the site and imagine how this impressive structure was built around 3500 BC.

Wine tasting.

Sample an array of Languedoc wines and learn the secrets of winemaking at one of the local wineries as you tour France’s largest wine region.

Note, if you book the Minerve tour for a Tuesday, an extra stop can be made at the Olonzac Market in the morning.
