Morning:

Guests are picked up from the cruise ship port in Sète at agreed upon time for their shore excursion.

The morning is spent exploring the Cité, Basilica and the Visconte Castle of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, with your guide. The city’s strategic location proved optimal throughout multiple periods of history, from Neolithic times through the Middle Ages. The city’s fortified hilltop was constructed during the Gallo-Roman times, and was expanded upon in the 13th and 14th centuries.

Today, Carcassonne is the largest walled city in Europe with its massive walls spanning 3 km and 52 defensive towers overlooking the rest of the city.

Free time for lunch at one of the many restaurants in the cité.

Afternoon:

Head off to Minerve, one of the most remarkable sites in Languedoc – Rousillon. Amongst a spectacular natural setting, the site has been inhabited since ancient times and was once an imposing medieval Cathar city, built by the Viscounts of Minerve. Wander through the village enjoying the typical authentic medieval architecture, paved streets and small gardens. Go down into the Cesse canyon and see the two natural bridges that the river created as it tunneled through the rock. You can even walk through them during the dry season (May – September)

Upon arrival to Pézenas you will be guided through the vibrant village to discover its rich heritage. This lively village used to be a prestigious royal town known for its big fairs and for being the Languedoc State Capital. Through the centuries, the medieval atmosphere of Pezenas has been maintained. Marvel at the 16th, 17th and 18th Century private mansions and their typical medieval Languedoc architecture.

Pezenas is also known as the ‘Art and Craft City’ which is best illustrated at the Saturday morning market, though every day of the week there is much talent on display. Over forty craftsmen with wide-ranging skills exhibit the goods they have designed and made in their on-site workshops.

Free time for lunch in one of the village’s many restaurants.

Afternoon:

visit the Valmagne Abbey founded in the 12th century. also known as the ‘vines Cathedral’ because of its location in the heart of Languedoc vineyards, Valmagne is a Cistercian abbey. Visit the cloister with its magnificent octagonal fountain and the Gothic church with its impressive wine barrel decor. The medieval garden offers a serene environment perfect for losing yourself in relaxation.
